Честита Баба Марта! Забулен в легенди, какво знаем за днешния празник?
Today, on the 1st of March, Bulgarians celebrate a unique holiday known as Честита Баба Марта. This holiday is deeply rooted in legends and traditions that have been passed down through generations.
According to folklore, Baba Marta is a feisty old lady who brings the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It is said that she is always in a bad mood, so people wear red and white wristbands called „martenitsi“ in order to appease her and ensure a smooth transition into the new season.
The martenitsi are typically made of red and white yarn, symbolizing health and happiness, and are worn until the first signs of spring are seen, such as blooming flowers or chirping birds. At that point, the martenitsi are either tied to a blossoming tree or buried in the ground, in hopes of attracting good luck for the rest of the year.
On Честита Баба Марта, people exchange martenitsi with friends, family, and coworkers as a way of wishing each other well for the coming year. It is a festive and joyful time, with streets adorned with red and white decorations and people sporting their martenitsi with pride.
In addition to the traditional customs surrounding Baba Marta, modern Bulgarians also celebrate this holiday by exchanging gifts, feasting on traditional dishes, and participating in various cultural events and festivals.
Although the origins of Честита Баба Марта are shrouded in mystery and folklore, one thing is certain – this holiday is a beloved tradition that brings people together and welcomes the start of a new season with warmth and happiness. So, to all Bulgarians celebrating today, честита Баба Марта! May your martenitsi bring you health, happiness, and good fortune in the year ahead.
